Biscuit, mid-shift, guarding his latest recovery.
Nobody taught Biscuit the beagle to do it. Yet three times this spring, a missing slipper reappeared on a Huckleberry Drive porch, delivered by a very proud dog with absolutely no idea whose slipper it was, or why that mattered less than the delivering.
His owners, the Petersons, first noticed the pattern in March: a single fuzzy slipper, slightly damp, placed with great ceremony on the welcome mat. They assumed a fluke. Then it happened again in April, and again in May, each time a different slipper from a different house.
A dog with a mission
Neighbors have started leaving single slippers out just to see if Biscuit will notice. He usually does. Nobody has explained the behavior, and honestly, nobody wants to. Some mysteries are better left as neighborhood folklore.
If you are missing a slipper, check your porch before you check anywhere else.
